What is that white stuff?

Sitting on the windowsill and the sink looking out at the snow

When Rolo and Monty joined our household, I wanted to keep them off the kitchen work surfaces, but I’ve made an exception for the sink, as it gives access to the windowsill, and I feel bad enough about denying them the outdoors (for their own good as we have busy roads nearby) without denying them even the opportunity to look at the outdoors!

I’m afraid that the contents of the sink indicate that the dishwasher should have been run – but we can’t all be perfect housekeepers… 😕

When we had snow in the middle of December, Rolo and Monty definitely wanted to take a look. They’re used to the outside being green, not white!

Website Update: Hever Castle Pictures, 20th December 2009

Hever Castle at Christmas

I’ve uploaded some more images taken at Hever Castle, and they can now be viewed on my website by visiting Helen Stephenson’s Hever Castle Pictures, 20th December 2009.

My website was hacked a while ago 😳 and was showing up on the search engines as an attack site, but I think I’ve sorted it all out now. Do drop me a comment if things are still showing up with warnings – I wouldn’t want you to click on anything dangerous! However, what I have just uploaded should be perfectly safe, as should my Chatham Dockyard Pictures – September 10th, 2006 – which were uploaded after the problem occurred, albeit before I found and got rid of all the nasties from existing pages.

Beckenham Concert Band at Hever Castle

Posted by HelenEdith on December 20, 2009

Hever Castle at Christmas

Today the Beckenham Concert Band performed at Hever Castle as part of their “Magic of Christmas” festivities. We had a marquee to play in, and it contained a heater and some lighting, but it was still pretty cold. I was rather glad that I wore two pairs of trousers. 🙂

The music requested by Hever Castle was Christmas music, but we also slipped in some numbers from “Oliver” in addition to the various Christmas carols and other assorted Christmas pieces like Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride”.

We expected our audience to be transitory as people visited the various attractions around the Castle, but there was one group of dedicated blanket-clad ladies who stayed for the whole performance! They jumped up and down whenever we played anything lively, which is probably all that kept them from being frozen to the spot, as there was real snow on the ground with the temperature to match. 😀

When we finished playing, there was still a little bit of light left and I put my camera up on my tripod for a few shots. I’ve included a picture of Hever Castle with a Christmas tree in front of it, but I got several other very pretty pictures and might even feel motivated to put them up on my website when I get a spare hour or two.

Website Update: Snow Pictures, February 2009

Posted by HelenEdith on March 2, 2009

We had a significant snowfall in London at the beginning of February.

It’s taken me a while, but I’ve finally edited the pictures I took over the course of the first three days of snow disruption, and they are on my website here: Snow, February 2009

Here are a few of the pictures you can find on the page linked above:

This is one of my signature night shots, and was taken with the aid of a tripod, as it was an exposure which ran into seconds. I had to clean up the colour balance in the raw file because the sodium street lighting rendered everything a rather uninteresting orange.

Here’s the same house the next morning by daylight.

By the time this picture was taken, it was the next day, the sun was out, and one of the cars had been dug out.

There were many snowmen. I even saw one on the roof of a bus shelter! I don’t know how it got up there: maybe there was enough snow up there to build it in-situ. This one was on the footpath of a village street.

You’ll have to visit the link provided if you want to see the rest of my pictures!

Website Update: Jessie’s Album 2008

Posted by HelenEdith on December 26, 2008

I printed off a collection of pictures for Stephen’s Mum (Jessie) and gave them to her for Christmas.

This year’s collection wasn’t quite as personal as in past years, as events have conspired this year and we haven’t managed to go to places together where we would want a photographic record, so apart from portraits of some of the cats and some flowers from her garden. most of the pictures are simply ones that I hope Jessie will enjoy looking at rather than pictures which have any greater significance.

The whole album can be viewed here: Jessie’s Album, 2008

Here are a few of the pictures that you will find in the album:

Parrots from “Pollys Rescued Parrots Road Show”, photographed at the Wrotham Steam & Vintage Classic, which was a rather waterlogged affair this year, so the vehicles weren’t at their best, but the bird displays weren’t so affected by the soggy conditions, and turned out to provide the best photo opportunities.

There are plenty of pictures in the album which have already appeared on my website, but this one, although it appeared in my blog last February, hasn’t previously made it to my website. The sky really was red for that sunset!

Entry for April 06, 2008 – Snow in London

Posted by HelenEdith on April 6, 2008

We had snow in London today! That’s the first snow I’ve seen all winter – and it’s supposed to be spring now, anyway. (Stephen saw some one morning a couple of weeks ago, but it had all melted before I got up.)

A jay was visiting our garden today and taking advantage of the food that Stephen puts out for the wild birds. Both the grain on the ground and the peanuts in the feeder came in for attention. When the jay used the peanut feeder, it then took the peanut up into the pear tree to eat it.

I think that the picture encapsulates today quite well: pear blossom covered in snow, and with a jay sitting on the branch of the tree.

Website update: Elmstead Woods Station Snow Pictures, February 25th, 2005

Posted by HelenEdith on August 25, 2007

I’ve moved an album of snow pictures from a couple of years ago out of Yahoo! Photos. I’ve added in a few extra pictures for good measure, as I got snow pictures on two different days, but apparently only ever showed people one lot.

Click here to view the pictures.

The picture I’ve displayed here shows one of the station staff shovelling snow while commuters wait on the next platform. It’s black and white, which seems to suit the subject.
