St Paul’s Cathedral, but not the Dome

Clock tower on the west front of St Pauls Cathedral, viewed from Cannon Street in the east

When we think about St Paul’s Cathedral, we usually think about the Dome, but when I am returning to Cannon Street Station in the evening, the Dome isn’t the view of St Paul’s that I can see. Instead, I can see the tower on the south west front, pictured above, which has a clock face set into it.

Depending upon weather conditions, the BT Tower, which is much further west, is visible behind this south west tower of St Paul’s. I would like a picture where the BT Tower is obscured, but so far haven’t had a camera on me on a day when the weather conditions obscure the BT Tower without making photography of St Paul’s from Cannon Street impossible as well.

For some more conventional pictures of St Paul’s, including the famous Dome, visit my website, where you will find some night shots (what else 🙂 ) at St Paul’s Cathedral Pictures, October 7th, 2005.

Red Routemaster Bus

Routemaster bus entering Cannon Street

Routemaster bus entering Cannon Street

I know I’ve got at least one reader who loves the old Routemaster bus. The Routemaster has been banished from most routes in favour of single operator buses which are additionally more disabled-friendly, but some “Heritage” routes are still partly operated by Routemasters; and Route 15 happens to run along Cannon Street, which I walk along most days when I visit The City, so I’m in a position to snap the occasional picture of one of these post-WWII buses which were so well-designed that we still see them on the streets of 21st Century London.

The number plate on this bus puts its year of registration as pre-1963, so she’s got at least 46 years of service behind her – and hopefully many more years ahead allowing tourists (and others 🙂 ) to enjoy the unique experience of boarding at the back of the bus via the platform and paying the conductor for a ticket.
