The design from Aston Martin-Foster

A number of new Routemaster designs have been put forward

A company has been chosen to build the new Routemaster bus for London.

Northern Ireland-based vehicle-making company Wrightbus is Transport for London’s (TfL) preferred manufacturer

TfL said the first of the “greener” and more accessible, hop-on hop-off, double-deckers could be in service by 2011.

Red Routemaster Bus

Routemaster bus entering Cannon Street

Routemaster bus entering Cannon Street

I know I’ve got at least one reader who loves the old Routemaster bus. The Routemaster has been banished from most routes in favour of single operator buses which are additionally more disabled-friendly, but some “Heritage” routes are still partly operated by Routemasters; and Route 15 happens to run along Cannon Street, which I walk along most days when I visit The City, so I’m in a position to snap the occasional picture of one of these post-WWII buses which were so well-designed that we still see them on the streets of 21st Century London.

The number plate on this bus puts its year of registration as pre-1963, so she’s got at least 46 years of service behind her – and hopefully many more years ahead allowing tourists (and others 🙂 ) to enjoy the unique experience of boarding at the back of the bus via the platform and paying the conductor for a ticket.

Entry for December 05, 2008 – Red Routemaster

Posted by HelenEdith on December 5, 2008

My picture of a brown and silver Routemaster, which I thought was unusual, and therefore worth remarking upon generated a request for a picture of a Routemaster in its traditional red livery.

So here it is. As far as I know, I had shake reduction on my cameraphone turned on, but this isn’t the best picture I’ve ever taken. However, it’s the better of the two I took this morning.

Entry for December 03, 2008 – Routemaster in unusual livery

Posted by HelenEdith on December 3, 2008

As I was walking into the office from Cannon Street this morning, I saw some Routemaster buses. Although they have been generally phased out as they don’t comply with the latest accessibility rules, they still run on some heritage routes, and one of those is the number 15 to Trafalgar Square.

In fact, I saw two Routemasters fairly closely following one another. I won’t go into the mathematics of why this happens, but I still remember it from my university days. You can just take it from me that it does happen!

The first Routemaster was a familiar red one. I very nearly got out my cameraphone just because it was a Routemaster, but by the time I thought about it, the bus was on the move.

Then I saw the second one, and it got held up by the traffic lights outside of Monument Station, so I grabbed my opportunity, and got myself a picture of a Routemaster in brown and silver livery. The signage says 75 years of London Transport and Bow Bus Garage Centenary. I would guess that the Bow Bus Garage had brown and silver as their colours!

Website update: Holiday Pictures – October, 2007 – Beamish, The North of England Open Air Museum

Posted by HelenEdith on August 24, 2008

Most of my Beamish pictures have been edited for some time, but now I’m finally getting around to putting them up on my website.

The first instalment consists of pictures of the trams, the bus, and a form of transport that doesn’t actually go anywhere: the merry-go-round.

Here they are: Helen Stephenson’s North East England Holiday Pictures – October, 2007 – Beamish, The North of England Open Air Museum
